On April 21, 2012 the Dutch cabinet of prime minister Rutte resigned ('collapsed', as it is called in international media.) This means two things that are important for people with Dutch nationality around the world, but also in Minnesota.
First of all the legislation proposal to avoid double nationality is tabled (or 'off the table' as the Dutch would say.) The CDA was not an avid supporter of the proposal and withdrew support for it immediately after the Kabinet ceased to effectively exist. D66 was from the start a clear opponent of the idea behind the proposal. The current legislation will stay in effect, which means that under certain circumstances you can obtain a second nationality. Second, there are elections coming up. If you have Dutch nationality and want to take part in the elections, you have to register. Even if you have registered for elections before, you have to register. I just (May 4) received an email from the registration office in The Hague, calling me to register again. Even if you did not receive such an email or voted in Dutch elections before, but want to now, you can.
